Gua Sha: Better Than Botox and Fillers?

Updated: Apr 4, 2023

Gua Sha is the ancient Chinese practice of massage. It is both incredibly relaxing and beneficial for your skin. The practice can be implemented all over the human body in order to stimulate energy points, activate lymph drainage, promote blood circulation, and reduce inflammation. Nowadays, however, it is commonly used on facial skin to enhance elasticity and radiance. Not only this, but if the correct facial acupressure points and their respective energetic meridians are activated, this heals the various organs that those acupressure points and meridians are connected to.

We often recommend Gua Sha to any of our clients who mention that they are considering Botox or fillers of any kind. This is because Gua Sha has a myriad of benefits and, when stacked up against the risks of non-invasive surgical procedures, Gua Sha always wins!

Now, let’s discuss what Botox and fillers are and how they work.

Botox & Fillers: What are They and How Do they Work?

Botox and dermal fillers are

two different forms of liquids that are injected under the skin to smooth fine lines, re-plump areas of the face and neck that have lost their youthful fullness, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. When Botox is injected under the skin, it is done in such a way that specific muscle groups are targeted. If, for example, you frown a lot, those muscles in the forehead can get trained to sit in a semi-frowning or furrowed position even when you’re not consciously doing it or aware of it. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are often made of one of three base ingredients such as calcium hydroxylapatite, hyaluronic acid, or poly-L-lactic acid. As a rule of thumb, Botox smoothens the skin and dermal fillers re-plump the skin.

Risks of Botox & Fillers

At the end of the day, Botox is a toxin, and fillers are made of synthetic materials. Injecting either of these compounds into your body will pose a risk to your health. If you do not have a certified professional doing your Botox, they could get the dosages wrong and you could end up with a potentially life-threatening condition known as botulism. Even under the care of a professional, mistakes happen. With a perfectly natural way to remedy your wrinkles and fine lines like Gua Sha, it just does not seem like a risk worth taking. Moreover, prolonged use of dermal fillers can lead to a weakening of the muscles in and around your face. Ultimately, you will have issues with swallowing, speaking, and even seeing straight.

Why Choose Gua Sha Instead?

Gua Sha has a plethora of benefits and it is completely safe to have done. Some of the more common Gua Sha benefits include:

  • As a rejuvenating facial contour, Gua Sha tones and firms your skin, all while lifting any excess or saggy skin.

  • As lymphatic drainage is promoted, you will notice a reduction in inflammation, puffiness, and dark circles around your eyes.

  • As toxins leave your body and your face, your complexion will become brighter, healthier, and more radiant.

  • The massaging action will help to relieve tension in your face and neck.

  • As your skin relaxes, the procedure will also loosen excess sebum, enhancing your skin’s ability to breathe.

  • With each stroke, your circulation is promoted, ensuring a refeeding of the skin and increasing its ability to absorb vital nutrients.

  • You will also experience a purification of deep tissue and the accumulation of waste in your body will be freed.

  • Finally, you can expect your channel system to be soothed and vented while the free flow of ki and blood is regulated.

It is worth mentioning that the treatment can be uncomfortable at times as your practitioner will work to loosen up tight areas in and around your face. However, this is a mild discomfort and it does not last the entirety of the session. In fact, Gua Sha can feel very relaxing and tranquil. It is always best to let your practitioner know if you are experiencing pain as this could be a sign that there is a blockage or growth beneath the skin.
